The International Pharmacy Journal is the official journal of the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP) and began in 1912 as the Bulletin de la Fédération Internationale Pharmaceutique. 2024 Leprosy: Public health and awareness

January 2024 saw the 70th anniversary of World Leprosy Day. The day was established by French philanthropist Raoul Follereau to create awareness about leprosy (renamed Hansen’s disease by Norwegian scientist Gerhard Henrick Armauer Hansen), address stigma, and advocate for equal treatment of those affected. Today, the campaign also aims to inform people that leprosy is a disease that is easily curable.1,4 In this article, Vaiyapuri Subramaniam discusses leprosy and public health challenges in its control and elimination.

2023 Pharmacy practice researchers explore concepts of integrated health systems

Healthcare systems are facing significant challenges, including increased demand after the COVID-19 pandemic, an ageing population and a rise in chronic diseases. Six years of civil war in Syria have left the vast majority of those who survive in poverty. But Syria is not the only country to be affected by the conflict. The United Nations estimates that five million Syrians have sought refuge in other lands. Neighbouring Lebanon, for example, now has the highest per capita concentration of refugees in the world. It has seen the very fabric of its society change and is struggling to cope. Lin-Nam Wang spoke to three Lebanese pharmacists about their experiences of providing pharmaceutical care in this new environment and what is needed to mitigate an even bigger health crisis in the future.
