Staphylococcus aureus is an important human pathogen that causes a variety of infectious diseases. S. aureus secretes an enzyme coagulase that activates prothrombin and initiates blood clotting. It has been found that coagulase cannot activate the prothrombin of Mongolian gerbil, Meriones unguiculatus.
