FIP World List
of Pharmacy Schools

FIP, as the global leader for pharmacy, has taken the initiative to build the “FIP World List of Pharmacy Schools”, which will be the most comprehensive and up-to-date list of pharmacy institutions from around the world. This global list is intended to guide all pharmacy stakeholders, from students to policymakers, in assessing the appropriateness and effectiveness of pharmacy education strategies. The availability, completeness and quality of FIP’s World List of Pharmacy Schools means it will provide a unique source of information for pharmaceutical workforce policies, procedures and plans.

The FIP World List of Pharmacy Schools is an initiative to monitor pharmaceutical capacity and capability, similar to those of many other global organisations, such as the World Medical Schools List held by the World Medical Association. Given 2021 is the World Health Organization’s Year of Health and Care Workers, the need for our global organisations to demonstrate increased capacity in all health workers is key to ensure our professions are not further diminished but amplified.

FIP is a founder member of the World Health Professions Alliance (WHPA) with doctors, nurses, dentists, and physiotherapists. All WHPA members have been requested to feedback their schools’ status to the WHO as part of pandemic preparedness, and FIP having a list of accredited pharmacy schools will help to identify where schools may be needed and created to ensure long-term pharmaceutical workforce capacity.

University of Science and Technology, Sana'a -Yemen (USTY) was earlier established in 1994 in Sana'a, Yemen as the National College of Science and Technology, which has been developed enormously over the past twenty-nine years. Over years, USTY has overrun a remarkable academic progress as a major provider of higher education in Yemen, standing head-to-head even with major public universities.

Its own academic programs have seen expansion, and it now has nine faculties: Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences - Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Pharmacy - Faculty of Dentistry – Faculty of Computing and Information Technology- Faculty of Administrative Sciences - Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences -Faculty of Distance Education -and Deanship of Postgraduate Studies and Scientific Research.
USTY has a modern teaching hospital which also provides medical care to the public. Its Business School is accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business, (AACSB). In cooperation with foreign universities, it runs degree programs at undergraduate and graduate levels.
USTY also has four branches throughout Yemen, a special branch for girls in Sana’a as USTY offers separate education for both girls and boys, and sixteen learning, research, consultation and development centres.
It revamped its academic programs to be current, introduced a Foundation year, as well as a set of university courses to give a balanced perspective to the students. USTY emphasizes the use of both Arabic and English as it sees the two languages becoming very important in the near future.
Today, the university has achieved a presence and is an active member of major educational associations such as Association of Arab Universities, Arab Higher Education Institutions, Federation of Universities of the Islamic World, Association of World Universities, Arab Network for Open and Distance Education, Member of International Council for Open and Distance Learning (ICDE), Member of International Computer Driving License (ICDL). Member of Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB International). Its linkages with foreign universities in China, Malaysia, Turkey, Netherlands, Italy and other regional universities has resulted in exchange of students, exchange of staff, conducting joint research, and the holding of international conferences in Yemen. Of importance too is the work done by the USTY for the community which has had major impact on poverty eradication, community/public health, improving childbirth and maternal care, and thus leading to improved community development. In the works is the setting up of a centre for Civil Society Organizations which will then spearhead the University role in development.
Faculty of Pharmacy is one of the few faculties in Yemen offering education in Pharmacy. In addition to teaching pharmacy, the faculty also has one affiliated centres for research and pharmaceutical studies.
The various papers are taught via lectures, seminars, field visits, clinical work, study skills lab, and internship. The medium of instruction is English. The major strengths of the faculty are the infrastructure, qualified staff, state of the art equipment. The staff are both local and foreign. Students should study at USTY Pharmacy faculty because of the excellent reputation it has and the nature of the training the faculty provides. The faculty is going for international accreditation and this will ensure that the students are assured of the quality of education and thus will be recognized anywhere in the world.
The faculty offers degree Programs in bachelor of pharmacy for five years and doctor pharmacy for 6 years including one internship year.
