New FIP Workforce Development Hub to progress pharmacy workforce transformation around the world

All press releases

The Hague • 7 November 2018

Today sees the official launch of the Workforce Development Hub (WDH) by the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP), with the aim of transforming the global pharmaceutical workforce and meeting the health needs of societies.

The WDH, headed by its director Professor Ian Bates and FIP Education’s project coordinator and researcher Dr Lina Bader, brings together experts in workforce and education to generate intelligence and provide evidence-based resources to inform and support workforce and education development. “The launch of this hub is the culmination of more than 10 years of progressive innovation and leadership,” says Professor Bates. “It brings together the foundations of workforce transformation pioneered by FIP and reworks these strategies into practical, useful and impactful actions for national states and member organisations to use. Workforce transformation is the single biggest factor in advancing the professional impact of pharmacists in health care and medicines innovation. We cannot afford to fail in this mission.”

The main aims of the WDH will be to: expand the global evidence base on pharmaceutical education and the workforce; facilitate the needs-based, country-level implementation of FIP Education tools and the outcomes of the Global Conference on Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences Education in 2016; increase stakeholder engagement, knowledge exchange and partnership building; and monitor progress and evaluate impact and implementation. The hub has a number of focal areas and strategic platforms linked to FIP’s Pharmaceutical Workforce Development Goals (PWDGs), which will be led by the following international team:

  • Professor Claire Anderson (UK) — academic and institutional capacity (PWDG 1)
  • Mr Mike Rouse (USA) — quality assurance (PWDG 3)
  • Dr Kirstie Galbraith (Australia) — advanced practice and specialisation (PWDG 4)
  • Professor Jill Boone (USA) — interprofessional education and collaborative practice (PWDG 8)
  • Professor Toyin Tofade (USA) — continuing professional development and continuing education (PWDG 9)
  • Mr Christopher John (UK) — workforce intelligence and the Global Pharmacy Workforce Observatory (PWDG 12)
  • Dr Ian Larson (Australia) — strategic platform for e-platforms and IT-based learning
  • Ms Susan James (Canada) — strategic platform for pharmacy technicians and support workforce

The WDH will be recruiting new global leads and expert volunteers to support its mission to transform the global workforce. Calls will go out in 2019.
