FIP World List
of Pharmacy Schools

FIP, as the global leader for pharmacy, has taken the initiative to build the “FIP World List of Pharmacy Schools”, which will be the most comprehensive and up-to-date list of pharmacy institutions from around the world. This global list is intended to guide all pharmacy stakeholders, from students to policymakers, in assessing the appropriateness and effectiveness of pharmacy education strategies. The availability, completeness and quality of FIP’s World List of Pharmacy Schools means it will provide a unique source of information for pharmaceutical workforce policies, procedures and plans.

Further background on the FIP World List of Pharmacy Schools:

The FIP World List of Pharmacy Schools is an initiative to monitor pharmaceutical capacity and capability, similar to those of many other global organisations, such as the World Medical Schools List held by the World Medical Association. Given 2021 is the World Health Organization’s Year of Health and Care Workers, the need for our global organisations to demonstrate increased capacity in all health workers is key to ensure our professions are not further diminished but amplified.

FIP is a founder member of the World Health Professions Alliance (WHPA) with doctors, nurses, dentists, and physiotherapists. All WHPA members have been requested to feedback their schools’ status to the WHO as part of pandemic preparedness, and FIP having a list of accredited pharmacy schools will help to identify where schools may be needed and created to ensure long-term pharmaceutical workforce capacity.

Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (The National University of Malaysia) was set up in 1970 as a result of a resurgence of nationalism and the vision for the establishment of a Malay language-based university. The main campus is located in Bangi, approximately 35 km from Kuala Lumpur. However, the pharmacy programme is offered at the Kuala Lumpur Campus, located in downtown Kuala Lumpur and is easily accessible by all modes of transport.

The Pharmacy programme at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) began in 1995. The first cohort of 21 students enrolled for the Bachelor of Pharmacy (Honours) which was offered under the Faculty of Allied Health Sciences. Entry into the programme is after a total of 12/13 years of primary and secondary school education with qualifications equivalent to GCE “A” levels. In 2008, the Faculty of Pharmacy was set up in UKM. The Faculty of Pharmacy currently offers the Bachelor of Pharmacy (Honours), Master of Clinical Pharmacy (coursework), Master of Pharmaceutical Analysis (coursework) and Master and PhD (by research) programmes. Research is primarily carried out under 3 research groups - Quality Use of Medicine, Drug Discovery and Development and Drug Delivery and Novel Targets.

Currently, foreign students are not enrolled for the undergraduate programme but students from Pakistan, India, Yemen, Jordan and other countries are registered for postgraduate programmes.

Our undergraduate degree is accredited by the Pharmacy Board of Malaysia. The Malaysian Qualifications Agency and the Pharmacy Council of Singapore. UKM has also received ISO 9001:2008 certification for teaching and learning.
