FIP World List
of Pharmacy Schools

FIP, as the global leader for pharmacy, has taken the initiative to build the “FIP World List of Pharmacy Schools”, which will be the most comprehensive and up-to-date list of pharmacy institutions from around the world. This global list is intended to guide all pharmacy stakeholders, from students to policymakers, in assessing the appropriateness and effectiveness of pharmacy education strategies. The availability, completeness and quality of FIP’s World List of Pharmacy Schools means it will provide a unique source of information for pharmaceutical workforce policies, procedures and plans.

Further background on the FIP World List of Pharmacy Schools:

The FIP World List of Pharmacy Schools is an initiative to monitor pharmaceutical capacity and capability, similar to those of many other global organisations, such as the World Medical Schools List held by the World Medical Association. Given 2021 is the World Health Organization’s Year of Health and Care Workers, the need for our global organisations to demonstrate increased capacity in all health workers is key to ensure our professions are not further diminished but amplified.

FIP is a founder member of the World Health Professions Alliance (WHPA) with doctors, nurses, dentists, and physiotherapists. All WHPA members have been requested to feedback their schools’ status to the WHO as part of pandemic preparedness, and FIP having a list of accredited pharmacy schools will help to identify where schools may be needed and created to ensure long-term pharmaceutical workforce capacity.

Located in Albuquerque, New Mexico, in the historically-rich Southwestern United States, the University of New Mexico College of Pharmacy is part of the State of New Mexico's largest health complex, UNM Health Sciences Center, and works collaboratively with UNM's School of Medicine, College of Nursing, UNM Hospitals, and UNM Cancer Center. Established in 1945, UNM College of Pharmacy is the oldest health professional educational program, and the only college of pharmacy in New Mexico. Unique programs within the College include the New Mexico Poison and Drug Information Center, UNM/NMSU Cooperative Pharmacy program, and the oldest training program in nuclear pharmacy in the United States.  The College co-sponsors Post Graduate Year 1 and 2 residencies in infectious disease, cardiovascular, and geriatric pharmacotherapy.

Currently, 434 Doctor of Pharmacy students are enrolled.  The student body is one of the most diverse in the nation with the third highest number of Hispanic and the second highest number of Native American pharmacy students among all colleges of pharmacy in the U.S. The College has more than 2,800 alumni from the professional program who practice in 48 states.  Nearly 2/3 of all pharmacists practicing in New Mexico are alumni of the College.  The College has 57 faculty and more than 250 preceptors throughout the state.

New Mexico has unparalleled innovation and commitment to pharmacy.  Whether one measures this as “pharmacist clinicians”, a title only 3 states in the U.S. hold, or as the true dedication to the profession and our patients, the UNM College of Pharmacy is a trailblazer at the forefront of clinical advancements in the practice of pharmacy.  The College, as well as the State of New Mexico, is committed to improving patient care through drug discovery and enhancing healthcare outcomes; providing immunizations to all citizens (regardless of age); being one of the few states with prescriptive authority for tobacco cessation and emergency contraception; providing tuberculin skin testing; and being a leader in the development of new interprofessional models of care with particularly noteworthy activities in disease state management and medication therapy management.

The mission of the UNM College of Pharmacy is to develop innovative leaders in pharmaceutical care and research who enhance the quality of life for the people of New Mexico.
